We’re all well aware that glass surfaces in the home can be a bit of a pain to clean. Windows need regular maintenance to keep them in great condition, as they’re so exposed to external debris and dust. Ineffective cleaning can also leave them covered in annoying streaks and handprints.

If your budget doesn’t cover hiring a professional window cleaner, there’s still plenty you can do yourself to keep your windows sparkling. Here are our top tips to help with the process:

Create your own cleaning solution

Save yourself money by making a DIY window cleaning solution at home with just three ingredients. Mix dishwashing liquid with half a cup of rubbing oil and add in a single tablespoon of ammonia. Use a spray bottle to spritz your windows and wipe away with a dry clean cloth. It’s more eco-friendly and less costly than constantly having to buy new cleaning products for a shiny window!

Clean your windows when there’s no sun

On a quest to avoid those frustrating streaks? Save your window cleaning for an overcast day! Otherwise, the sunlight will dry out the cleaning solution and leave your windows looking extra streaky.

Use a blackboard eraser to buff your windows

Streaks are undoubtedly one of the most annoying things about window cleaning. Sometimes no matter how much you buff, you can never seem to get rid of those pesky streaks. The good news is that there is a DIY hack around this. Purchase a standard blackboard eraser and run it over the glass surface once you’ve cleaned for an impeccable streak-free finish.

Use a baking soda paste to clean the tracks

Window cleaning isn’t just about the glass surfaces. Tackle grimy window tracks by creating a homemade paste of baking soda and white vinegar.  Simply cover the tracks with the paste for 10 minutes and wipe away the debris with ease using an old toothbrush to get into the crevices.
